12 Must-Haves When Packing for Southeast Asia With a Toddler
1. Bug Spray
Let’s start with one of the most important items on any Southeast Asia packing list – bug spray. The mosquitoes in Southeast Asia are relentless, and you’ll want a spray that actually works.
While local brands are convenient to find, I’ve always preferred the stronger well-known brands, and call me crazy, but I swear you can feel them working harder! We used Off! brand and had ZERO bug bites during our trip.
Maybe it’s all in my head, but I felt like the stronger formula gave us that extra layer of protection, and our toddler never once complained about itchy bites.
2. Plug-in Bug Repellent
When you’re staying in hotels, especially in places where the windows are left open during the day, you’re probably going to encounter more than your fair share of mosquitos in the evening.
That’s why we always bring along plug-in bug repellent. These little devices are so easy to use – just plug them into the wall and done! The mosquitos don’t stand a chance. We’d keep one plugged in overnight, and it worked wonders in keeping the bugs at bay.
It’s compact, lightweight, and essential for the hotel rooms that might not have proper screens on the windows.
3. Plastic Bags/Ziplocs
You’ll be thankful for these, trust me. Plastic bags and Ziplocs are like the travel godsends of toddler life. Whether you’re dealing with dirty clothes, half-eaten snacks, or unexpected accidents, these little bags will save you.
We used them for everything from stashing dirty clothes to holding the leftover half of a banana (because, why do toddlers always leave food half-eaten?!). Plus, they don’t take up much space in your luggage, so pack extras!
4. Charcoal Pills
Okay, so this one’s a little more on the “better safe than sorry” side. After a day or two of street food (because, let’s face it, who can resist?), you might find yourself worrying about food bugs.
We’ve always kept a bottle of charcoal pills on hand. Consult with your pediatrician first, but these pills have come in handy for those occasional moments when your toddler has a stomach bug. We’ve given her a small dose in emergency situations, and it works like a charm.
It’s one of those items you hope you never have to use, but you’ll be glad you packed them if you do!
5. Electrolyte Tablets
One of the best things we packed for our trip was electrolyte tablets. Traveling with a toddler means your schedule is all over the place, and you’re probably going to experience jet lag (for you and the little one).
These tablets are perfect for keeping everyone hydrated and fighting off that groggy feeling. We found they helped a lot with adjusting to the time change, and we gave our toddler a bit to keep her feeling good during long flights or days out exploring.
As always, check with your pediatrician, but electrolytes are a pretty safe bet for most kids.
6. Light, Humid-Friendly Clothing
When it comes to clothes, comfort is key – especially in Southeast Asia’s hot and humid climate. Light, breathable fabrics that are also full coverage are your best bet. Avoid heavy materials that will leave your toddler feeling sticky and overheated.
Trust me, you don’t want to be trying to wrangle a sweaty, grumpy toddler into clothes that won’t dry overnight if you have to do laundry in the sink. Linen clothing is fantastic for this: it’s comfortable, lightweight, and dries quickly.
7. Air Floaties
If you’re staying at a hotel with a pool or hitting the beach, don’t bother buying a pool floaty on arrival – pack your own! We found that air floaties are super easy to stuff in a suitcase, and you can blow them up in minutes when you need them.
They fold flat, and they saved us the hassle of looking for one once we arrived. Definitely a must if you plan on any pool or beach days with your toddler.
8. Portable Coloring Pads/Notepads
Here’s a little life hack for those long waits or moments when your toddler just needs a distraction. Portable coloring pads or notepads are perfect for keeping your little one entertained without screen time.
Whether it’s while waiting for food at a restaurant or passing time on a long boat ride, these simple and lightweight items can keep them busy for a good amount of time. Plus, they’re small enough to toss in your bag and totally worth the space.
9. Kid Camera
Do your toddler a favor and get them their own kid camera (or a hand-me-down digital camera if you have one lying around). It’s a great way for your toddler to feel involved in the trip, and let’s be honest, it’ll keep them entertained while you’re snapping photos of your adventure.
On our trip, we gave our toddler an old 15-year-old digital camera, and now it’s one of her favorite hobbies – taking photos just like mom and dad!
10. Sunglasses
Sunglasses aren’t just for looking cool – they’re actually super practical, especially in places like Southeast Asia where the sun is intense and the air is often filled with dust.
We made sure to bring sunglasses for everyone, especially our toddler. It keeps them comfortable and protected from the sun, plus they won’t squint all the time, which makes for better photos (you’re welcome).
11. Face Mask
This one might sound a little out there, but hear me out. Face masks are a great thing to have on hand, especially in crowded places or near motorized vehicles. Southeast Asia is known for its hustle and bustle, and some cities can get pretty smoggy or dusty.
If your toddler will agree to wear one without a fight, it can help filter out that dust and keep them from inhaling too much pollution. This is particularly a must if your toddler is sensitive to dust particles.
12. Portable Detergent
If you’re one of those parents who just can’t stand stains (and who can blame you with toddler food explosions?), portable detergent is a must-have.
We found that the detergent we bought locally in Thailand and Laos just didn’t cut it for toddler stains. A quick wash in the sink doesn’t always get things clean enough, so we brought along a bottle of detergent we found in Europe that worked wonders.
FAQs Toddler Packing List for Southeast Asia
Q: Can I bring liquids through airport security when flying with a toddler?
A: Yes! Most airports allow parents to bring liquids (like water bottles) for their kids through security without a problem. We’ve always just waved the bottle at security and had no issues. It’s a nice little perk when traveling with young children!
Q: What kind of clothing should I pack for my toddler in Southeast Asia?
A: Stick to lightweight, breathable clothing like cotton or linen. Avoid anything too heavy, as it can cause your little one to overheat. Quick-drying clothes are also a bonus if you’re doing laundry in a hotel sink.
Q: Are there kid-friendly places to visit in Southeast Asia?
A: Southeast Asia isn’t exactly known for catering to kids in the way some Western countries do (think kiddie play areas), so it’s a good idea to pack entertainment like coloring pads or a toy camera to keep your toddler occupied during visits to temples or museums.
Q: Any tips for flying with AirAsia with a toddler?
A: One of the perks we loved about flying with AirAsia was their baggage allowance system. They allow you to combine the total weight of your group’s luggage. For example, if the allowance is 15kg per bag and there are three of you, you don’t need to worry about each bag being exactly 15kg.
As long as the grand total of all your bags doesn’t exceed 45kg (15kg x 3), you’re good to go. This made packing a little less stressful since we could mix and match between bags! Plus, it helped us fit in all those toddler essentials.
