Where In Puglia Is Marina Serra and the Natural Pool?

Belonging to the province of Lecce, the southernmost point of Puglia is situated in the town of Santa Maria di Leuca. The location of Santa Maria di Leuca is also the conjunction of two seas, the Ionian and Adriatic Sea.

This entire southern section of Puglia is also known as the Salento peninsula, which many will argue to be the heart of Puglia.

Spiaggia e Piscina Naturale di Marina Serra (Beach and Natural Pool of Marina Serra in English) can be found just 17 km north of Santa Maria di Leuca. From the inland town of Tricase, the natural pool is just 4 km east along the Adriatic.

When possibly combined with a visit to neighboring Tricase Porto, Piscina Naturale di Marina Serra is worthy of a day trip if you are traveling throughout other areas of Puglia such as Otranto. From Salento’s main town of Lecce, Marina Serra can be found 60 km south.

What to See in Marina Serra

The small coastline of Marina Serra is home to a few different attractions. If your main interest is to visit the natural pool, it’s worth knowing that there are technically two swimming spots.

In typical Italian fashion, the “beaches” go by a couple of different names, but if you follow their locations on Google Maps, you’ll end up at the right places.

  • Spiaggia e Piscina Naturale di Marina Serra is located in the northern end of Marina Serra. With a handful of different legends claiming the creation of its wonder, its pure beauty is instantly apparent. This natural pool is unquestionably the main attraction but also not the only sight worth checking out.
  • Just a few steps south of the more well known piscina naturale is piscina scavata, which is an old boat marina. For first time visitors, it’s easy to mistake Piscina Scavata for the natural pool that Marina Serra is known for. Piscina Scavata is distinctly more rectangular-shaped, as it is manmade. The outdated loading dock now serves as a beach-like entrance.
  • Within the cliffs and behind Jamao Music Drinks, you’ll find the cave of Grotta Marina Naturale (also known as Grotta Spinchialuru). From street level, there are very dark stairs which lead all the way down to the cave’s entrance.
  • An ancient watchtower, by the name of Torre Palane, is situated at the very northern side of Marina Serra. Comparatively, it is in excellent shape and can only be admired from the outside.

How to Get To Marina Serra

By Car

Similar to 90% of the places we’d recommend seeing in Puglia, the easiest way to reach Marina Serra is by car. For even beginner drivers, reaching the Piscina Naturale is very simple along the main roads.

There are no gravel roads or unbelievably narrow streets to navigate in order to get there.

With less than a one hour drive from the cities of Lecce, Gallipoli and Otranto, Marina Serra is a convenient day trip option for those set on seeing something a little off the radar.

It is important to keep in mind that if you do arrive during a busy time, you may spend more than five minutes trying to find a parking spot (more info on parking is below). If you do not mind a short walk, turn left on Via Carlo Mirabello after driving down the hill and park at the very end of the road.

Boat Tour

Marina Serra in Puglia is not often a stop on scheduled boat tours. However, if you are chartering a boat with your own agenda or have hired a boat with a skipper, you can certainly include the natural pools in your itinerary.

Utilizing a boat to reach the natural pools is also the best option if you plan on exploring the caves nearby, which is overall safer to do from the sea. Arriving at the swimming holes by boat also allows for a completely unique perspective on such a stunning place.

For anyone interested in this route, it’s recommended to search for a boat tour agency in Tricase Porto and perhaps Castro.

Tips for Visiting Marina Serra

When to Visit

With every amazing destination comes one downside – crowds. Unfortunately, Marina Serra in Puglia is not immune to the many other visitors who are just as excited to see it as you are.

Even though it’s unlikely to ever visit the pools without another person in sight, arriving before 9 am to claim a prime spot is required during the summer months. Aside from the early morning, you can try to avoid fewer people during lunchtime or just before sunset.

Naturally, visiting Marina Serra in September or early October is absolutely the best idea for avoiding fellow tourists.

Parking Near Marina Serra

Along the main road that runs above the coast, you’ll see cars parked on both sides of the street. Although there are parking meters along this road, we found no evidence of anyone actually paying for parking.

This is up to your own discretion, and if you do not want to risk it, the further down either side you drive, the greater chance you’ll have of finding free parking.

🚗 PRO TIP: Based on our own ample experience with driving in southern Italy, we found that there is a major unwritten rule for parking. As long as you’re not blocking another car and leave enough room to pass, you can create your own parking spot where necessary.

Accessibility & Visiting With Children

This section of Salento is not famous for its sandy beaches like those of Gallipoli or further north. As a visitor, plan on sitting on flat concrete or rock surfaces instead of a traditional beach when visiting Marina Serra.

For being carved out of a rocky coast, Piscina Naturale is surprisingly enjoyable for people of all ages. After descending down a couple of stairways from street level, you’ll directly reach the main entrance to the pool.

You’ll find a metal ramp that allows for easy and safe access to get in and out of the water. For smaller children or people who cannot swim, it’s possible to simply use the ramp to cool down as the water is shallow enough and extremely calm.

We saw all different types of people enjoying the beautiful scene, including older people, snorkeling enthusiasts, and babies with floaties.

Along the sidelines of the Piscina Naturale, you’ll find alternative ways to hop into the water, but they’re not as gradual as the ramp. Still, if you have older children and can maneuver through some bigger rocks, you may find a quieter place to sit and mini pools created by the rock formations.

You’ll find that most people set up their umbrella on the cliffside along with a beach chair for a more comfortable experience.

Piscina Scavata has a more gentle entry point as you walk down a boat ramp to get into the water. Given certain parts of the day, the walls also act as natural shade along the natural pool, so there isn’t a need for an umbrella.

During peak months, Piscina Scavata is not without crowds by any means, but it is less frequented in comparison to the one next door.

Facilities at Marina Serra

There are no official facilities or services such as showers and toilets that belong to the two “piscine naturali”. Marina Serra in Puglia is an unstaffed and public place to swim, which certainly is one of the biggest reasons it’s so magnificent to visit.

Unlike what you’d find at a lido (paid beach in Italy), there are no umbrellas or sunbeds to rent, and no entrance fees to enjoy nature in all its glory.
